Zdravo!

Been a long while since Ive been on the forum here. Been an even longer while since Ive been out thataway to visit yall, since 2009 I think.

Im coming over next May right in the middle of the month.

Just wanted to ask if mid May is a good time to be fishing the upper Soca around Bovec and further up as thats where Ill be staying with the missus.

Oughta still be cold, Id think, but any chance of any flies hatching? Anything specific I should be tying?

Hvala!

Mike

Hi Mike,

mid May is usually perfect for fly fishing in Slovenia... hatches are on and rivers are ina very good shape. Soča, however, might still be snowy at that time... but if that is the case, you have plenty of options to fish on one of its numerous tributaries (with Tolmin fishing club license)... Temps can rise up to 25C during the day at that time, so it is already pretty warm...

I am sure you will enjoy your stay in the Soča valley a lot!

Cheers,
Lucky

Hi Luka,

Thanks for the response.

Im planning to do a bunch of hiking in Triglav and have another question:

What are the chances there will still be snow/ice on the trails - should I bring crampons or ice traction for my boots for hiking?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

yes, I suggest you to bring crampons and other winter essentials... there is still lots of snow in the alps (2-3m) and conditions are pretty much winter-like... it will be like that till late June high up in the mountains.

Cheers,
Lucky

Thanks so much for the help, Luka.

I have another question also if you dont mind. I may fish the Sava Bohinjka one day in the Bled Club's waters.

Their regulations specify, 'Weights in addition to fly line weight, such as split shot and lead weights, prohibited', but I am unsure if this also applies to weights that are part of a fly. For instance, a bead on a nymph or streamer, or lead wire wrapped along the hook before tying the streamer, etc.

I asked them, but they just sent me the same regulations that are posted on their website.

So is it ok to use a beadhead nymph or a jig fly here, or no?

Thanks again,

Mike

Leaded/weighted nymphs and jigs are allowed.

Zivjo,

I only ended up fishing on 3 of the 5 days I was in Slovenija. Mostly v Lepenijca. Really only spent maybe 10-12 hours fishing over those 3 days.

I caught a bunch of marble trout and rainbow trout. All fishing dry flies. Here are a few pictures and a couple of the fish I caught:

Had a wonderful time walking the Soca and hiking with the missus. Her first time visiting and she loved it, as well. Im planning to come back over again hopefully net year.

Hey Mike,

super nice! Thanks for sharing!

Glad that you enjoyed your time in the Soca valley... Have you managed to do some hiking as well?

Cheers,
Lucky

Hej Luka,

We decided not to do any serious hiking and didnt bring the winter equipment. Did about 18-20km walking on Soska Pot one day (Bovec - Kamp Klin - Bovec) along with a couple short walks to waterfalls and such.

Ate some great food, made friends with some great people, dodged truckloads of kayaking German tourists....the usual.
