Hi all,

I am travelling with two fishing partners to Slo next may 19th for a two weeks fishing trip. Our plan was to fish Sava B., Idrjca, Baca, Trebuscica and Savinja. It seems that the heavy snow fall of past winter is melting just now and rivers are running rather high. Not good news for us, dry fly fishers.

Any information about what to expect regarding fishing conditions on those rivers?

All suggestions will be appreciated.

Hvala lepa.

Hey Aitor,,,

Well I am quite sure that the conditions will be just perfect at all of the rivers you plan to fish at Maybe Savinja will be the most critical one, but I think that it will be fishable too- Gregor_ what do you think? (Gregor is one of the guys who is really familiar with the actual fishing conditions at the Savinja river )

At Idrijca and Baca river dry flies are already a good choice to fish with- I experienced it myself a week or two ago You may see the results here:

povezava [link] (my post from 27th April- all fish were cought using dry flies only )

Hi,

Nice fish indeed! And good news too! I am a little worried about high and cold rivers but it seems that nest week things will be OK. I also contacted Gregor through the Ljubno angling club web site. He said that Savinja is fishable now.

Which part of Baca did you fish? Lower (C&R) or upper?

Hvala.

Yes, I knew Gregor will be glad to help you about the recent conditions at the Savinja river

Usually I fish the upper part of the Baca river, but I also fished lower part this year and must say that both are equally good for fishing. The only difference is, that in lower part you will find huge rainbows and nice graylings also, which aren´t present in the upper part which is on the other hand rich with beautiful hybrids and marble trouts, but some smaller graylings also

So I think it is the best solution to try both on the same day And this is possible indeed

Well, even better would be to fish both areas one day each

I had planned fishing Tolmin's club waters from May 27th onwards, as we will be staying in Bohinj from 19th to 26th. But it looks that conditions are better on Idrjca's watershed so maybe we sholud change our scheduled. Do you think it would be a good idea to leave Sava B. for later and go first to Idrjca area?

Dober prijem.

Hello Aitor,

as you were refering to the fact that you and your friend's are dry fly fishers, I would like to mention, that you are not allowed to dry/nymph flyfish on Savinja river till the 1st of June (prolonged protection of grayling). Sooo did a little math - your's two weeks of Slovenian goodtime will be just a tad to short for dry fly season on beauty Savinja...

Wish you a pleasant fishing time!

Hi Sash,

I've been browsing around Ljubno angling club web site. It says that in Lucnica and in trophy area of Savinja (both C&R) all kinds of flies are allowed also in May.

Any hint about fishing there?

Hvala.

Here are the fishing regulations for Savinja (Ljubno FC) for 2006 :
******************************************************
wrote ...

DISTRICT 2:
The river Savinja from the confluence with river Lučnica down to the Savinjski bridge in Ljubno.
DISTRICT 3:
The river Savinja from dam Pekovski in the village Ljubno down to the dam Kolencev in Okonina.
In these two districts (from 15. April to 31. May) fishing is allowed only by the streamer larger then 5 cm, but from 1. June to 31. October dries and nymphs are allowed too.

Only flyfishing is allowed in all areas, with using only one fly on the leader. The flies must be tied on barbless hooks or the barb must be smashed down! Spinning and other forms of fishing are not allowed. Flyfishing out of a boat it is not allowed, and there is also not allowed to flyfish down from bridges or similar structures.

DISTRICT "CATCH & RELEASE":
The river Savinja from Logarska valley down to village Luče, then river Lučnica (5km) and trophy part of Savinja (2km), from the Savinjski bridge to Pekovski dam. Flyfishing in this part is allowed from 15. April to 31. October, using dries, nymphs and streamers. Every fish should be properly released!

Flyfishing basin near the Fishing club´s lodge:
Season from 1. March to 31. October. Streamers not allowed there!

I think you are right Aitor- only in 2nd and 3rd district dries and nymphs are not permitted till the 1st of June, but in Trophy part and Lucnica river all kinds of flies are permitted...

I think that Sava Bohinjka will be o.k. from 19th-26th May if there will be no heavy rain before that time and maybe you should consider visiting the Radovna river also if you will be in this part of Slovenia... Radovna is near Bled, maybe half an hour drive from Bohinj.

Dober prijem,
Lucky

Hi,

perfect rebound...
I am not the one who is able to give you first hand info's 'bout fishing Lučnica and trophy part of Savinja. From what I've heard Lucnica should be nice fishing indeed...

My last post was more or less pointer to Savinja river not her's 2K district. Degustibus non est disputandum.
Pozdrav, S.

Hey,,,

I agree with Piscator- maybe it wouldn´t be such a bad idea to plan your fishing trip to the Savinja river for the beginning of June... At that time you will be able to enjoy dry fly fishing at the whole part of the river managed by the Ljubno FC and not only at the 2km trophy part and Lucnica river

Hi again,

Lucky, I know Radovna, some years ago I drove up the road that follows the river, although I haven't fished it yet.

Do you think that Sava B. will be OK? A few days ago Matej from Fauna-Bled sent me an e-mail saying that dry fly action this season is very delayed

We'll see next friday. Arriving in Brnik airport at 14:30 we have all afternoon for checking river conditions.

That Savinja trophy part sounds very good, I don't promise to wait till june

Dober prijem.

Luckyluke thank you for correct data!

Just to notice you:

10km of 1st district (The river Savinja from Logarska valley down to village Luče)
+
5km of Lučnica
+
2km of the trophy part in Ljubno

That is aprx. 17 kilometers of water, and there is allowed to use dry flies and nymphs before 1st of june!
I think that is more than enough water to fish in...

Today's rain has stir the water a bit, so it is a bit muddy, but I think that should be ok tomorrow. However Lučnica is almost always good for fishing.

P.S. Zmešnjava pa taka...

Thanks Gregor,,,

Now we have finnaly managed to clarify regulations

@Aitor
Almost every year the regulations at our rivers change a bit (usually due to the improvements of management with waters among the fishing clubs), so it is quite hard to follow all of the changes...

That´s why we have this forum board- to exchange all of the recent changes and to get acquainted with the regimes and river conditions.

Tight lines,
Lucky

p.s.: Aitor, como se dice "dober prijem" en Espana y en Euzkadi?

Thank you for your help, it is really appreciated.

In Spain, altough there isn't as much snow as in Slovenia, mountain rivers don't have surface activity at least till end of June. That is the reason of my worries about river flows and temperatures on slovenian rivers.
I had some good dry fly fishing during May 05 on Sava B. but this season things seem to be different, aren't they?

I think that next friday afternoon we will take a look to Sava, Radovna and Savinja and, depending on our impressions, make a decision. There is nothing wrong with fishing nymphs or streamers for a while, but nothing compares to presenting a fly to a rising fish or even fishing the water with a dry fly

Any advise for places where start fishing on Savinja trophy part and upper part? And on Luenica?
Any comments about the kind of fishing we should expect?

Hvala.

Aitor.

P.D. Lucky, en espańol la expresión que se utiliza para decir "dober prijem" es "buena pesca". No es muy original

Gregor, that would be perfect!.
We will arrive at Brnik airport on friday 19th at 14:30, perhaps we could meet that same afternoon.

You say that you are on duty, are you the river warden?

Cheers.

Hey,,,

Latest update on conditions at slovenian rivers...

Due to a heavy rain in the last dozen of hours, water levels are getting higher. Weather forecast for the next days is good, so no more rain is expected, but most of the rivers will probably remain high till the week-end...

I will post some information about recent conditions in next days.

Tight lines,
Lucky

Hey,,,

Most of the rivers are getting back to their usual water levels so I think flyfishing will be just perfect during the weekend and the beginning of the next week Some rivers are still unfishable due to a high water level, so if you are interested in conditions at the particular river please feel free to ask us

Tight lines,
Lucky
