Hello every one.
I recently joined Muharjenje v Sloveniji and need some advice. I will be in Slovenia in early July of this year and wish to know if there is anywhere I could go river fishing using public transport buses from Ljubljana city. I do not want to travel too far out of the city - less than one hour away at most. The Iska River maybe? Any suggestions would be very welcome.
Thanks.

Hello!

The best flyfishing locations in Slovenia are in reach of the half hour from Ljubljana( by car). Most known are Unica and Krka. And yes, you can use public transport to, but traveling will take you some minutes. You can use taxi and everithing will be faster.

In the reach of one hour from Ljubljana by car, you can flyfis on other most known rivers in Slovenia like Radovna, Sava Bohinjka, Idrijca, Savinja, Rižana...

Hey Irishflyfisher and welcome to our forum board!

Guys have already posted some possibilities for fly fishing near Ljubljana. I may add Iscica river to that list. It is only a 10-15min drive from the centre of Ljubljana in the direction of the small town named Ig. Fly fishing district begins at the source of the river, just in the centre of Ig and extends for the first few kilometers. Public transportation is quite frequent from the central Bus station of Ljubljana, but you may also use a taxi as suggested before. It won´t cost you a fortune due to a relatively short distance. Iscica is a small, narrow chalk stream, full of grayling and brownies, so it should be a confy fly fishing choice if you plan to use public transportation. Season there starts on 1st March and ends at the end of November.

You mentioned the Iska river in your post- it is also a possibility, aprox. 10min. drive from the Ig town towards the hills above Ig. It is a really nice small stream of a completely different nature- it is more like an "alpine" streams in the northern or western part of our country. It is inhabited by some brown trouts, graylings and rainbows, but they are much smaller in avarage. River itself is also thinly populated in comparison to the Iscica river, so between those two I prefer the Iscica river. In July Iska is also full of tourists which bath in it, so it can get crowdy, especially in the weekends...

I hope this info helps and that you will enjoy your stay in Slovenia!

Tight lines,
Lucky

Hello everyone who replied to my query. Thanks for your advice and information. I think I will go fishing on the Iscica river as suggested by LuckyLuke. Photographs of this river on this website remind me of chalkstreams in southern England I have fished before. The next day if Im still around, I think I will then try to fish the Iska River. I was in Slovenia last year and got to fish the Sava Bohinjka (and Sora) so really like these alpine rivers very much. They are completely different to any rivers in Ireland.
Anyway, thanks again.

Irishflyfisher if you will fish on Iščica river, than do not forget same natural looking flies like phasant tail an similar flies, because fishing on Iščica for brown trout can bi very complicated. On the other hand fishing for greyling whit dry fly in Iščica can be very easy.

And yes Iščica is just like chalkstreams in UK.

If you will need some other advices about Iščica(flies, places...) you can send me PM.

Hello again. Can you recommend some flies for the Iscica river this july. I would like to tie some local patterns for this river but need some advice on tying material etc.
Thanks.

Hello! As I said. Try with famous phasant tail and similar flies. It is very important, that you try to imitate natural nymphs, like baetis nymphs.....! However you can try with golden head nymphs to, like Hares ear nymph and similar, but I prefer natural ones!

For fishing with dry flies any cdc-flies will be good! You can try with brown and olive dry flies on hooks num. 12 to 18. EHC fly is useful to.

Of course there are some other good flies to, like Slovenian sedge, gammarus....

Luka & the rest: Iščica was completely dried up TWICE this week in it's most upper part for so far unknown reason. People are working on the subject - investigating the situation, because it has happened before!

Don't know yet what the consequences are but it doesn't look good...(namely some say that people were virtually picking fish from the river bed! Lower part had enough water...esp under the confluence with Ĺ˝...

Hello m8!
There are quite a few locations for flyfishing near Ljubljana. If you will take a taxi you can get almost anywhere(Krka, Unica, Sava, even Radovna) within 1 hour. On the other hand bus services at that time could be a problem. If you will take a bus you have actualy only 2 choices. Either Iscica or Kamniska Bistrica. Guys already told you much about Iscica, but if you are interested i can tell you some things about Kamniska Bistrica. I'm not sure for my plans at start of July, but if i'll have time i can accompany you there.

I agree with Jernej - according Kamniska Bistrica being much better choice especially if you have no experience with both rivers. I think that KB is much easier and forgiving if you ask me and gives you much more choice than Iscica.

Hello, Jernej, Fish and Mariachi. Thank you for your suggestions for fishing this summer. The Kamniska Bistrica seems a likely choice now if the Iscica is still having problems. I have worked within the freshwater fisheries management industry for a number of years and have never heard of a river having such problems in Winter. Is there water abstraction from the Iscica river? Perhaps the aquifer which supplies the river is being over-exploited? Just a few ideas.
This aside (to Jernej) I will be in Ljubljana on the 4th and 5th of July and would welcome some one to fish with. I have flyfished for twenty plus years but was still taught a lot last summer by other Slovenian fishermen.
To s52vk - Thanks again for your suggestions for fly patterns etc.

Hello,

Does anyone know about the current state of the Iscica river? Has it recovered?

Thank you

Hello kapelj, thank you for the information too!

However last time (June 21 - 24) I had no time to visit either, as some plans changed. Maybe next time!
