Hi Luc! Fishing to the huchen - sulec is quite a hard work. In our country the sulec is known as " a fish of 1000 casts" and ussually You need more than 1000 to catch one. So if You want to catch a sulec with fly rod, You need for every realized cast also 2 or 3 blind casts. With these numbers I just want to emphasize that fly fishing for sulec is even harder work than fishing it with spinning rod. With spinner You can faster fish larger area of water, because of the longer casts. With fly rod you are also limited with possible obstacles behind You which disable Your back casting. Another problem is that sulec is usually catching in the bottom of the river with heavy baits (25g - 50g). No fly rod could cast that weight. But never-the-less the flyrod has also some advantges as compared to the spinner, i.e. the presentation with flyrod is smother and if water is not very fast You can also get Your bait to the bottom. So in that conditions the flyfishing to sulec could be very succesful. In Slovenija the Sava Bohinjka is known as a river were sulec is catching with a flyrod. This is smaller river were longer casts are not needed. Regards, Janez [ Edited Sunday 23 December 2007 - 10:39:57 ] |

Hello, quick question...Is catch and release fishing allowed year round for huchen or is the only time you are allowed to target them during the winter months? Hvala! |

I see. The reason I was asking is because there is a new US outfitter that is offering guided trips for huchen during the summer months. They claim to have teamed up with the sport fishing manager of the Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia so maybe they have a special pass to fish them other times. Anyway, I just wanted to know whether it would be possible to fish for them next year on my trip. I will just concentrate on the Soca watershed as planned. Hvala! Hi Mike! A Slovenian Fisheries Research Institute managing a part of a Sava river. They could have some individual politics about the huchen fishing as compared to the local fishing clubs. So it could be possilbe to fish for a huchen during summer, but only in their part of river. Regards, Janez |

Hey luc384,,, Janez has already kindly given you some detailed information about fishing for danubian salmon (lat. hucho hucho, in Slovenian SULEC) in Slovenian rivers, so let me just welcome you to our forum board! I hope you will feel comfortable with us... We would be also very glad to read your report from the january fishing for "sulec" with your flyfishing rod!
