Good to all fly fishers. I'm new to this forum. My name is Rob Kociancic I live in Alberta Canada where I have been fly fishing for the past 30 years in our waters here. I go back to slovenia every year for 1 or 2 months as my parents spend 5 months of the year there. (Father from Koper, mother from Trieste) I will be fishing for the first time this year in the beautiful waters of Slovania and can't wait to hook into the browns. I will be coming in July and I very much look forward to meeting the wonderful people who live to fly fish like I do. As the year goes on I will be posting some photo's of the fly fishing waters we have here in alberta.

Tight lines all and see you soon.

Good day to all fly fishers
Just started planning my trip to slovenia. I just wanted to get some of the members on this forum feedback as to what order would you put these 4 rivers in for brown trout. (catch and release of course)
a) idrijca
b) Unica
c) Krka
d) Radovna

These are the 4 I'm planning to fish in July. How would you rate these 1-2-3 and 4 Your knowledge and comments would be appreciated.

thank you

Rk

Hey zhivago and welcome to our forum board!

Since you posted your questions in two separate topics, I joined them in one, so we have all of them in one place, which makes it easier to answer you

Slovenia is full of beautiful rivers, full of brown trouts and all of the rivers you mentioned in your post will serve your wishes. For me, it is almost impossible to vote for the best one, as I really enjoy a lot at all of them. Each of them has its own character, so I suggest to you to check out topics in the "Rivers" section of the forum board and find out which of them you like the most

Regards,
Lucky

Hi,

I agree with Luka that mentioned rivers are different. Since you mentioned brown trout its important that you know that the choice of rivers is huge. Regarding your wisit I suggest that you also check other rives, because Idrijca can have a lot of fishermen present in that time, and water levels on Krka and Radovna can be low.

The best option is that you ask same question week before coming when we will know weather prediction and know water levels.

Tight lines !!!

thank you fishman. I will definitly as this question before I come. I look forward to my fellow fly fisherman's guidance for proper information.

I was wondering if you fishman or any others on this forum have fished Rizana or any other of the 4 rivers I mentioned(Krka, Idrijca, Unica or Radovna) in July. I appreciate your comments about water levels etc. I just want to get the feeling from some of you as to what the fishing is like that month of the year.

Tight lines

Hi Rk,

Being our your side of the ocean, my knowledge of Slovenian waters pales in comparison to the knowledge of those that have already responded. However, I have fished the Idrijca a few times - once in July - and have never caught a brown trout in her waters. Ive caught plenty of marble trout and hybrids, but never a brown. Also, as Mariachi suggests, the fishing in July can be very slow with good fishing only to be had in the early mornings and late evenings. I know that isnt the information you are after, but I thought Id just add my experiences.

On a side note, youve some absolutely stunning waters where you are, and Im certain everyone here would absolutely love to see photos from your home rivers. Not to hijack your topic too much, but, for the Slovenian guys, here is a photo of myself fishing in one of your Alberta rivers:

I have a difficult time deciding whether I love that river or the lovely Idrijca more, but, either way, one cant go wrong casting a fly in their waters!

Good luck on your trip, and I am looking forward to seeing more pics of lovely Alberta!

Mike

hi MikeL and Mariachi

thank you for your information. We have a home just outside of Koper and it seems the waters are not that far to travel to. As Mariachi said the best thing to do is to touch base with the forum a week or two before I get there. Yes MikeL, the waters here in Alberta are some of the best in the world. My fishing is mainly in Central and Southern Alberta. Rivers I fish regularily are Crowsnest river, Livingstone, Highwood river, Bow River, these are in the South. Central alberta such rivers as Stauffer(north raven river) Priare Creek, are great brown trout streams. I don't have any recent pictures but I promise I will send you some on this forum when the season opens this year. You can go on Google and type in any one of the rivers I listed, put Alberta after the name, and get a good understanding of our fishing waters here. I extend an invitation to anyone who is traveling to Alberta to stay in touch and if you would like to do some fishing (Lets Go).

MikeL you mentioned your on my side of the ocean, where abouts??? If your ever in alberta Again Let me know and we can hook up for a fishing trip. I show you some great water.
