You know what, Urni?

Over the last few days I’ve been reading a very interesting book: “Trout of the world” by American author James Prosek.

Writing about the phenotypical differences among native European trout, he says that the “zebra” pattern is found only in the handful of rivers of the Mediterranean basin (Southern Europe, Sardinia, Corsica and Northern Africa) that hold the purest, oldest resident populations of native trout (from the famous “truite zebree” of the Loue River, in France, to the less known, but equally magnificent indigenous brown trout of Southern Italy).

But it’s no coincidence, I guess, that the book cover is illustrated by an elegant watercolour depicting a “zebra” Slovenian marble trout from the Zadlascica river!

P.S.: the second picture that I’m attaching is a characteristic example of the beautiful “zebra” browns that I use to catch in the Volturno River, between Rome and Naples.

Wonderful report, Samaki!

Based on the first picture (if my memory of the place is correct) it looks like the big marbles were caught quite far from the Idrijca confluence. Do you think that they are resident Trebuscica trout or that they are Idrijca based and were caught on their way to the spawning grounds in the upper Trebuscica?

@ Urni: Did you recognize some of your "victims"?

Hi, Dickerson!

We went only to some pools, which are not too far from the road, where our truck was waiting. We planned to catch 15 females and 10 males but there were so many that we had 30 + 15 in a nick of time. So, we finished the whole procedure by the fish farm. Normally, we caught many more fish, even some nice graylings, but we chose only the bigger ones, fenotipically looking like pure marbles. Some where too big for putting them in the bucket and we transported them in the landing net in a relay fashion as shown in the last three photos.

In the hatchery, they were tagged and a small piece of fin from each fish sent for genetic analysis to the laboratory at Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana. Those, tested pure marbles, will be stripped and the fish returned to Trebuscica. The fertilised eggs will provide a new generation of breeders for our fish farm.

The marbles are already wandering up stream from Idrijca and there are really many of them, Some have spawned already.

Today, we checked one sanctuary stream with the original genetic pure population of marble trouts which was very much impacted by floods in 2007 and again this year. Where lived more than 300 fish before, we found today only 11 fish and among them only 3 females. The natural catastrophies are definitely the gravest threat to such populations.

@ Samaki: Grazie mille, amico mio, for the additional pictures ... you know how interested I am in the Marble Trout Rehabilitation Program and in the R.D. Tolmin field activities!
And based on the last picture ... it looks like some of the marbles were already busy spawning!

@ Urni: You got it! That's exactly the pool I was thinking about.

Samaki in vsa ekipa bravo !

Danes smo jih smukali in nato vrnili v Trebuščico. Pokazal pa vam bom serijo "čistih" in nato še serijo "križanih".

Najprej "čiste" soške postrvi:

No, sedaj pa še križane:

No in potem naj se ribič znajde......

@samaki,

@Urni Sulec,

hvala za opozorilo. Dve fotki križancev (-) sta mi pobegnili v prvo serijo genetsko čistih soških. V glavnem (+) označuje čiste, (-) pa križance.

Lep pozdrav
