Hello,

I will be visiting Slovenia from the Netherlands the end of this month (September) and plan on fishing the Unica and Krka rivers. I would like to get some help in deciding what type of flies, especially dry flies, which I need to tie up and bring along. Besides the type of fly, the size and color to use when I tie them would be very helpful as well. Also, any other information that you would care to share about these rivers or other suggestions would be nice.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Mike and warmly welcome to our flyfishing site!

Unica and Krka rivers are a perfect choice for automn flyfishing, so I am sure you will have a great time there .

Fish become quite fastidious at this time of year so light tackle, fine tippets and small flies (#16-#20) should be used. Natural brown, dark green, grey, dirty yellow, blue dun, dark tan, etc. colors of flies never fail. Try using some nice little blue-dun or natural gray CDC patterns (CDC&elks, F-flies, different variations of emergers or flymphs, tied with partridge and CDC fibers), sedges (brown, black, silver- grizzly), witches, tied on hooks #16 - #20, coachmen, variations of the "mosquito" theme flies, classic hare´s ears nymphs, copper johns, caddis larvae, shrimps (gamarus), prince nymphs, etc. All these flies are usually successful on these two rivers...

I hope this information helps you, but if you need further assistance please feel free to post it down and we will try to help you

Tight lines,
Lucky

Thank you very much for the detailed response. I need to get to work and start tying.

I have one other question please. Should I need to buy any fly items in case of breakage or loss can you give me the name and town of any fishing shops around or in between Postojna, Novo Mesto and Ljubljana.

Thank you,

Michael Santangelo

Hey Mike,,,

I am not sure about shops in Postojna and Novo mesto, but there are some flyfishing shops in Ljubljana. One that can be easily found is "Pravi ribic" in the basement of the "EMPORIUM" clothes shop building in the "BTC City" area. You will get there from the eastern part of the Ljubljana motorway ring - just follow the south (you will get there from the highway from Koper,Postojna direction) and eastern part of the Ljubljana motorway ring, but don´t continue your way to Novo mesto, but turn left to Maribor. After few km you will drive under the road and railway bridges. When you will be under the railway bridge, just exit the motorway (road climbs to a viaduct which is crossing the Ljubljana motorway ring) and turn left to the Letaliska road. Drive cca. 5 min. and you will see a large EMPORIUM sign on the building on your right side. Park your car in front of the building and enter it. Go downstairs and find the mentioned shop Shop is opened from 9:00 to 20:00 every day except sunday.

Uf, this wasn´t an easy thing to explain

Here is a link to the picture of how to find BTC City: povezava [link]

Anyway I hope you won´t need this advice

Tight lines,
Lucky
