Hi,

well it depends where will you fish (if you have the car) most of Slovene rivers will be at you reach. If you are limited to Ribno location (near Bled). Then you will probably decide to flyfish on Sava Bohinjka or Radovna rivers, both are simmilar alpine rivers so a bit heavyer nymphs will do fine and smaller dry flies.

I hope that other forum members will give you the exact types of nymphs and dries for may season on those rivers.

Best regards and tight lines,

Hey flyfishgrl,

I am very glad that you decided to join us! Not many girls had joined us before, so we are delighted that we have a chance to share our fly fishing feelings with someone of opposite sex

Well, as fishman has written down, you will have many possibilities for fly fishing around Ribno. Sava Bohinjka, Sava Dolinka, joined Sava river, Mostnica and Radovna rivers...all miraculous and superb fly fishing districts. You may read more about them in the "Rivers" section of this website.

Flies... Since you will be here during the most intense hatch of insects, you should be successful by using all kinds of mayfly patterns in all stadia (nymphs, emergers, adult flies). Colours- from dirty yellow to blue dun, combined with natural greenish, brownish and greyish casts. One of my favourite dry flies for that time is H. Weilenmann“s CDC&Elk pattern which successfully imitates a large variety of insects which may be found at that time of the year on the river surface... I suggest you to tie some nymphs on the hooks #12 to #14 (you may even try with some larger ones). Due to fast currents in all rivers tie in some tungsten beads to make nymphs heavier. If you are after some bigger fish, you shouldn“t forget some nice brown, olive green, grey or black streamers at home

I hope you will have a great time in Slovenia. If you need any further information please feel free to post it here...

Tight lines,
Lucky

Hi LuckyLuke and Fishman:

I'll be coming to the same area a little earlier in May, from May 5 - May 12. Do the same fly recommendations that you gave to Flyfishgrl apply to this period? I've read that hatches don't really start until the latter part of May. Also, are there fly shops in the area where I can buy local flies?

Thanks a lot for any advice.

Gene

Hey Gene and welcome to the forum board!

It is difficult to predict when days with more intense hatches will begin this season. But they usually begin in the middle of May, at the colder alpine streams a little later, and at the chalk streams a little earlier. But it all depends on the conditions, water temperatures, etc. It seems that this year, the period of snowy waters may extend a bit, due to large amount of snow in the mountains... we will see. I suggest you to post your question on recent water conditions here at the forum board, just before you leave to Slovenia... And flies selection is very much the same as it was written in previous posts. One thing is important- never rely on dry fly fishing only and bring your nymphs with you too.

Tight lines,
Lucky

Hi ā€œflyfishgrlā€,

I have very little to add to the wise and expert fly suggestions provided by the local connoisseurs.

I used to fish the Sava Bohinjka quite a lot during the first half of the ā€˜90s, back in the days when the river was a true grayling Eden.

By the end of the decade the fishing was clearly not as good as it used to be, and I decided to turn to other first-class Slovenian fisheries.

Last year I went back to the beautiful Bohinjka valley on the last week of May and I was impressed by the quality of the fishing, especially with dry flies.

The river was low and gin clear, and all kinds of big sized insects were hatching: giant stoneflies, ephemera and ecdyonurus mayflies, sedges ā€¦ you name it !

Fish were eager to take dries from the surface: graylings were busy sipping mayfly duns and spinners, rainbows jumping to chase sedges and stoneflies and browns ready to leave their hiding spots in the shadow to join the banquet.

I enjoyed the dry-fly fishing so much that I didnā€™t even tie a nymph or a streamer to fool a big rainbow.

Have fun on the Sava !

Hey,,,

@Hennessy

Welcome to the forum board

@dickerson

Very nice pictures and report! And nice rod too I see that youve enjoyed the Sava Bohinjka river at its best. Insect hatches are usually quite intensive there, so it is really a fly fishing paradise. Bohinjka river is definitely one of the Slovenian top notch fly fishing district and for all of those that want to try their luck there, here are the latest news for S. Bohinjka- river is clear but due to snow melt and low water temperatures, fish are not so active yet. Forecasts say that the weather will be nice in the following days, so it may get a little warmer, ensuring better fishing... It is hard to predict the conditions for the second half of May, but I still expect some snowy water, since there is still a lot of snow in the mountains to melt...

Tight lines,
Lucky
