Hello,

I will live in Nova Gorica for 4 months and I have found much sites about flyfishing in slovenia, but since Nova Gorica is near Italia, I wonder if it is possible to fish in italian rivers...

I presume there are also beautiful rivers in italia, like in slovenia. Could you please tell me where I could fish, and what are the license prices?

Thank you!

JV

Dear “jvbrunet”,

Since I am Italian, I hope I can assist you with some useful information.

First of all, let me make it clear from the beginning that the most beautiful and productive fly-fishing rivers are in Slovenia, not in Italy. Therefore, if the cost the licence (30 to 100 euros per rod per day) is not an issue, you should not leave Slovenia, period.

In case your budget does not allow such luxury, Friuli – Venezia Giulia, the Italian region bordering with Slovenia, is an affordable alternative, with plenty of trout and grayling rivers and creeks for you to explore (just don’t expect to find the size and number of fish that swim East of Nova Gorica).

To fish in Friuli – Venezia Giulia, you need to bring your passport or other I.D. card and to purchase a daily (20 euros), weekly (40 euros limited to 4 fishing days) or monthly permit (70 euros limited to 16 fishing days).

I haven’t been fishing in Friuli – Venezia Giulia for quite a while, because these days I prefer to travel all the way to Slovenia when I have the chance to make a “long distance” fishing trip, but I feel quite confident in suggesting you to try medium sized freestone rivers like the Resia, the Fella, the Natisone the Cellina and the Arzino, as well as well as difficult chalk-streams like the Livenza and the Varmo.

Fish species are the same that you’re bound to find in Slovenia: marble, rainbow and brown trout, grayling and cyprinids.

Best regards

Dear “jvbrunet”,

I'm quite sure that after you have tried Italy you will soon feel the need to fish Slovenia!

Does it mean that italian rivers aren't good, or that slovenian are even better?!

It means that Italian waters would be much better if they were managed like the Slovenian rivers.

It also implies that the Slovenian rivers (Soca, Idrijca, Sava, Unica and so forth) are the best trout & grayling fly-waters in Europe and among the best in the world.
