Can You help me out..... I´m going to spend 4 days in the Tolmin area from the 4th of july. But where can I find the best Dryfly-fishing? Which Mayflies hatch at this period.... and what about Caddis and Stoneflies. Can You suggest any flies, that will do the job (along with me!!!).. I do prefer Dryfly-fishing Thanks Torben, Denmark |

Hey Torben! I think you will fish well with dry flies at all rivers, managed by the Tolmin fishing club due to perfect conditions for the time you plan to travel to Slovenia. So just keep tying and bring your fly boxes full of dries with you Of course bring also some nymphs and streamers with you, because it is hard to expect that fish will feed at the surface all day long... Hmm... flies. You may never fail by using some nice little blue-dun or natural gray CDC patterns (CDC&elks, F-flies, different variations of emergers or flymphs, tied with partridge and CDC fibers), sedges (brown, black, silver- grizzly), witches, tied on hooks #14-#18, classic hare´s ears nymphs, copper johns, caddis larvae, shrimps (gamarus), streamers- muddler minows, tied with elk, combined with marabou in light gray, dark brown, olive and black colours, wooly buggers, etc., tied on large hooks... I hope this helps and that you will have a great time in Slovenia Tight lines, Lucky [ Edited Tuesday 24 June 2008 - 20:09:02 ] |

Hello Torben, Luckyluke has already provided you with all the information that you’ll ever need, and even more ! Reading his prompt and generous (as usual) reply to your questions, I couldn’t help thinking how blessed we are today with the internet: back in 1992, when I was planning my first fishing trip to in Slovenia, such information was harder to access than military secrets. Months ahead of my departure, I started to collect old magazine articles and second hand copies of even older ones, to make expensive international phone calls to hotels, fishing clubs and people who were supposed to be “in the know”, and so forth. Back to our topic: since you also asked where you’re supposed to find the best dry-fly fishing in early July, don’t overlook the tributaries of the Soca and the Idrijca. Medium sized rivers like the Tolminka, the Baca, the Nadiza and the Lepena; as well as smaller streams like the Trebuscica and the Kneza, can usually be quite rewarding with the dry-fly even during the central hours of the day when fish are not rising on the big rivers. Last but not least, keep your mind open and don’t forget the good advise that Luckyluke gave you about nymph and streamer fishing. You see, I love dry-fly fishing as much as you do, but sometimes, in order to be successful, you just have to switch to subsurface patterns. Good luck for your upcoming fishing holiday ! Hi Lucky Luke & Dickerson. Thanks for Your replies Sadly my friend has to cancel the trip to Slovenia because of private matters (nothing serious, just bad planning ) But we might visit Tolmin in fall instead..... When will be a good time normally ??? Last fall 2007 we went in the week 40 or 41, and we met the worst conditions after only two good days...... Is it possible to talk of a generally good week ??? (I know weather changes and nothing is for sure, but we are looking for some good hatches / You know,- dryflies ) Thanks Torben, DK [ Edited Monday 30 June 2008 - 19:25:32 ] |
