In less than a month, I will be in Slovenia for a week of fishing. But I also need to find a place to run in preparation for an upcoming 'Marathon' in October. Are there any trails in the Tolminska region that would be good for running? I would like to run between 25 and 30 kilometers. I am also considering running through town if I cannot find a decent trail. I know that the town Most Na Soci isn't very conducive to running, but I am unsure about Tolmin. Is Tolmin friendly for running? I would like to run 2 days at least on my trip, but only 1 of the days will this long run. The other day I would only run 10-15km. Any help is appreciated. Najlepša hvala! Mike PS Oprostite za vpisati angleško. Ne vem rečem veliko po Slovensko. [ Edited Monday 11 August 2008 - 14:49:06 ] |

Hey MikeL I think the best trail to run is the small road the left side of the river Soča, that conects Tolmin and Kobarid because the traffic is poor. The problem is that is long only about 10 kilometers. It goes from the center of Tolmin through the villages Volarje, Kamno and other, till you reach the Napoleon bridge that conects villages Kobarid and Dreznica. Other roads are too crowded with traffic. Best regards |

Hvala, Anselmo. 10km je zelo dobro! Morem iti do Koabrid in prislon v Tolmin! On this map, is the route you are speaking of Road 102? Is there a shoulder area on which to run or will I be running in the road and need to worry about dodging cars? Thanks again, Mike |

On this map, is the route you are speaking of Road 102? No. Is the smaller road (in white) on the other side of Soča. It starts in Tolmin and goes through villages Dolje, Gabrje, Volarje, Selisce, Kamno, Smast, Ladra and arrives near Napoleon bridge. There´s no shoulder area to run on, but only the road. If anyone sees some crazy American running down the middle of the road, stop and say, 'Hello'. | ||

Hey Mike, last time as I was there have seen few runners doing their daily joggings around Soca's accumulation lake - we call it warm up runs (pace 4-4:30 per kilometer). But I can't speak about present situation, cause haven't been training there for half of decade or even more. Hope you get your act together in Ljubljana. A friend of my 'll hopefully manage 2:20 marathon. Hope the weather works for both of you. My career of real training as long distance triathlete is over and am getting over it. But still manage to a bit, Ok, admit it, almost daily dose of distance trainings to make my heart pumping... Regards, S. |

Piscator, This will be my first Marathon. There is no way I will be able to match your friend's time, but I am hoping to manage under 3:30. I have been training very hard and do not want to miss 2.5 weeks of running during my 1 week of fishing in Slovenia and 1.5 weeks of sightseeing with my wife in Italy. I hope to make it out 3 or 4 times, at least, in Italy before she wakes up in the morning. Thanks for the well wishes, and I hope your friend is able to make his time. Mike |

Sometimes I feel like this running thing is taking too much time away from the other things I want to do but I have to keep going so i can make it through the race! Ill take time from fishing during the middle part of the day when the fishing is normally slowest anyway. |

Speaking of fishing... Does anyone know what types of flies may be hatching in September? I am mostly a streamer fisherman, but always enjoy 'matching the hatch' if the hatch is on. Right now I have a little bit of everything tied up, but if I can tie more of the local bugs I will. Hvala. [ Edited Wednesday 13 August 2008 - 01:42:03 ] |
