Hi everyone, I'm a swede living in Tenneesse, U.S.A. since 1994. I fish mostly in the Appalachian mountains for Rainbow, Brown and some Brook Trout (american char). I discovered this web site among others and I fell in love with your rivers. I'm planning on visiting Sweden in 2010 and I'm thinking about stopping for week in Slovenia and go on to Sweden from there. I would really love to fish for some grayling. I received a nice brochure from the Slovenian Tourist Board about fishing in Slovenia. I guess I'm going to have to make an itinerary. It looks like Rivers Meza, Savinja, and Dreta would be good for Grayling. I guess I need some more information on where I should spend my time, river Krka seems nice too. Oh I can go on and on.

If anyone ever need some info on Southern U.S. and it's fishing I can help you. Thanks for a nice forum.

Hans a.ka. tennswede.

Hi and welcome to the forum. This site is owned by "luckyluke" and he will officially welcome you . You mentioned grayling fishing. Yes we do have some wonderfull rivers in Slovenia and many of them are populated with grayling and of course other species too. I suggest that you wisit Soča river or tributaries cause you can fish for grayling and marble trout. If you are really true grayling fan wisit the Unica river witch is world nown grayling river. there are also many other rivers to wisit I hope that other forum members will gibe you some usefull informations.

Best regards and tight lines !!!

Hey tennswede and welcome to our forum board!

Fishman has already kindly answered you. I just want to add that you may experience splendid grayling fly fishing at the Soca and Sava rivers (with their tributaries). Slovenian rivers are inhabited by two types of graylings. Type which lives in the rivers of Adriatic aquatorium (river Soca with its tributaries) is called Adriatic grayling or Soca grayling. The other one, which lives in the rivers of Danubian aquatorium (River Sava with its tributaries) is called Sava grayling. This two fenotypes differ especially in the color of their body. Body of the Soca grayling is more grayish colored, with purple colored gill covers and with less or no dots on it. It reaches sizes of up to 60cm and weights of up to 2kg. Every fish above 50cm is a trophy one...

You may experience great fly fishing for grayling at the following rivers:
Soca with its tributaries
Idrijca with its tributaries
Sava with its tributaries (Sava Bohinjka, Dolinka)
Unica
Savinja with its tributaries

Krka is a really nice river for brown and rainbow trout, but you will find more graylings in the rivers mentioned above.

I hope this information helps.

Tight lines,
Lucky

Thanks to you both. I'm really hoping to come to Slovenia in spring of 2010. I have to combine it with a stop in Sweden to see family. I was first thinking about fishing in either Norway or Sweden but then I kind of know how difficult the weather situation can be up north. What would be the best time for grayling in Slovenia. Do I need to worry about snow melt and what about mosquitoes and weather in general? Sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to time this right.

Thanks,

Hi again,

Spring time can be tricky in alpine rivers, depends when you will arriwe. If the spring temperatures are high snow will melt in alps and in spring that means high water but on the other hand colder weather in march and april means that soča and tributaries are fishable till snow starts to melt. I suggest that you check this spring conditions if you are comming in spring 2010.

...and another important fact- season for grayling opens on 16th May at most of the rivers, when graylings finish their spawning process. But it is true that Soca and other alpine rivers might get snowy till that time, so fishing can be difficult. Most of the rivers in Slovenia open on 1st April, some on 1st March. Usually there are no problems with snowy water till May, so you may experience a very nice trout fishing in that time. If you plan to fish for the marble trout (Soca river and its tributaries and some other rivers in SW Slovenia), you should also know that the season begins on 1st April.

Mosquitoes are not a problem at all, so you won´t need any nets or repelents (except at the Unica river in the summer time). But anyway take your anti-tick repelent with you because there is a small chance to get one while crawling on the banks of the river...

Weather is usually ok, with temps around 15C in April and 20C in May. In April there is usually more rain, but it is hard to say what will be the conditions like in 2010, so please check the situation a week or two before you come to Slovenia. You will also get all necessary information at this forum board so "stay tuned"

Tight lines,
Lucky

Thanks to both of you again. It sounds like you all have the same kind of temperatures and weather in spring as we do here in Tennessee. We don't have any snowmelt to speak of though. I'm thinking my best chances for good grayling fishing would be in June instead of April, May. I'm kind of flexible when I come. I'm really interested in grayling so I would like to time it for that species.

Thanks
