Hey "Igor",

Fist of all, congratulations for catching such a beautiful, huge Idrijca marble trout !

To reply to your Thursday, 12 June 2008 post: I parked my car near the bridge at the upper end of the new C&R area of the R.D. Idrija in the early afternoon on June 11, strung up my rod and moved downstream along the path in the woods in order to fish a bunch of nice pools and riffles that I know pretty well.

By six or seven p.m. it started to rain cats and dogs, but trout were constantly rising on a very good ecdyonurus hatch, so I decided to hold on and keep fishing regarless the horrible weather conditions.

Photo report to follow.

Since you can’t access the other parts of the R.D. Idrija waters with the C&R permit, it looks like the new no-kill area sees very little fishing pressure.
On June 11, I didn’t notice any other angler during the entire afternoon.
When I started fishing, there was a sparse gray sedge hatch, and I managed to catch a handful of trout on a size 12 CDC & Elk Hair Caddis pattern.
One of them was a large, beefy hen hybrid. She took the dry fly rising from the shadows of the opposite bank and fought long and hard in the strong current before I was finally able to land her.
As I have already written in my previous post, the evening hatch consisted mainly of ecdyonurus spinners, and many trout (especially rainbows) were rising under a heavy rain shower.

More R.D. Idrija reports to follow.

June 13 was another cold and rainy day (maximum temperature 14°), but the wind was not blowing on the upper Idrijca, hatches of gray sedges and BWO’s kept the fish active on the surface throughout the day and the dry-fly fishing was spectacular !

During the morning and afternoon hours I landed plenty of rainbows, hybrids and a couple of beautiful grayling under a steady light rain.

But as they say in America: “good luck doesn’t give change”, and the best fish of the day were caught after 8 p.m.

The first one was a beefy, colourful hen rainbow that fought brutally in the open current, jumping and rushing downstream like a fury.

The last fish of the evening was a huge, magnificent male brown trout that rose like a swimming ghost from the dark, deep undercut bank on the opposite side of the river to grab my caddis fly.

Stay tuned: more reports to follow.

June 17 was the day of the big thunderstorm that eventually messed up all the rivers in Slovenia, but before it started to rain the dry-fly fishing on the upper Idrijca was out of this world !
Around 10 a.m. there was a spectacular BWO and sedge hatch. Birds were flying low, grabbing insects from the water surface in the same places where fish were rising at a frantic pace.
It was the very first time in my life when I saw an oversize marble trout feeding on mayfly duns. It must have been at least 90 cm long. It moved from the deep, rocky bottom of the pool to a shallow glide where I had already caught a handful of very nice fish, and calmly started to sip BWO’s. I could hardly believe my eyes: the other trout immediately disappeared from sight, and the big marmorata was the only rising fish in the entire area. I decided to stay calm before making a cast, since I knew that the first one was probably going to be my last and only chance to hook the giant. So I switched from 5X to 4X tippet, tied an olive dun emerger and raised my eyes back to the water … but “Moby Dick” was gone.
Thinking about it now, I’m pretty sure that my chances to catch that monster were very slim, but maybe I should have made that cast right away, without wasting those few, precious moments.
At 1.30 p.m. the sky broke up and down came the flood, a bombardment of rain that lasted more than an hour.
The river held up pretty well for an extra couple of hours, and the fish resumed their surface activity pretty soon, banqueting on the leftovers of the BWO hatch and on any other insect that happened to fall in the water during the downpour.
So I moved upstream and managed to catch a few more big browns, marbles, hybrids and rainbows on the dry-fly before the water became too high and muddy.
Only then I realized that I was stuck on the wrong side of the river, having waded across the stream when it was clear and low.
Fortunately, a few dozen meters behind me I found a narrow path leading to the next bridge, and after a very long walk I finally made it back to my car.

To be continued.

Hey dickerson,

thanks a lot for the great reports from your fly fishing trip to Slovenia Beautiful photos and really fantastic fish!

I fished at the lower Idrijca (managed by the Tolmin Fishing Club) yesterday and had a great time chasing large hybrid trouts with dry flies, wet flies and flymphs just before the huge thunderstorm hit the Idrijca valley. Fish were feeding like it was their last day on the planet Every few seconds there was a fish mouth at the surface- I actually saw many of them circle just beneath the surface- and every single one of them above 40cm in length. I managed to realize some of the takes- but the most choosy was the largest one in the pool After probably more than 100 casts (it seemed to me like there were more than 500 ) and more than a dozen changed flies, it finally took one of them (actually a field modified dry fly- only body and a few fibers of softer hackle) and after I realized it was one of the biggest ones I have ever cought on a dry fly, it managed to get rid of a fly and returned to its pool Well, I was happy and completely satisfied that I managed to finally catch it, but I was left with the feeling that I wanted to saw her majesty in all her beauty I estimated that it had around 70cm in length...

And than it suddenly started to rain cats and dogs, so I just ran away and try to avoid falling trees on the road to home

Dickerson thanks again for your contribution to this forum board and tight lines,
Lucky

Ciao “Lucky”,

It looks like yesterday you experienced a perfect dry-fly fishing day just like the ones I had on the upper Idrijca on June 17 and 19 !

Maybe we should pray (and dance) for rain, lightning and thunder more often on the eve of our fishing trips, and very much so if we wish to have the extraordinary privilege to cast our dry-flies to rising marble trout.

What else can a fisherman ask for ?

On June 19, the upper Idrijca was still a little bit high, but the water was clear and the sky was blue.

Since I was almost sure that I was going to spend the whole day tossing big, weighted nymphs and streamers, I rigged up my dear, old 9’0’’ # 7 Payne, but as soon as I hit the water it became clear that the situation was going to be completely different: by 9.00 a.m. fish were already rising everywhere !

During the morning hours I caught lots of trout on the dry-fly, including two large, beautiful hen marmoratas that were very difficult to land due to their size and to the faster than usual current.

The first “lady” took a size 16 sedge rising with a big splash from a shady back-water, then she rushed straight into the deep, fast pool below, and I had to follow her downstream for quite a while before I was able to play her on the reel. It was a long fight because she didn’t want to go to shallower water, and I couldn’t force her to do so either, since I was scared to break the 5x tippet.

The second hen marble grabbed a size 12 CDC & Elk Hair Caddis in a thin side eddy and acted pretty much like her “sister”, taking full advantage of the unusual strength of the current, and I was very lucky that she didn’t swim further downstream into a very fast riffle where it would have much easier for her to get rid of the hook.

… more to follow …

Zdravo!

Tungsten razni jigi itd... niso sporni.

Lp in dober prijem.

Well, this is the final chapter of my series of reports from the 2008 trip to Slovenia.

The pictures were taken from 5.30 to 9.15 p.m. on June 19 on the Revir A waters between Spodnja Idrija and Idrija.

The fish that I’m holding in the 3rd picture (shot by a kind Spanish fisherman ... thank you so much if you’re reading) is probably the biggest brown trout that I’ve ever caught on the dry-fly.

He was (and still is, I hope) a wonderful, super strong 58 cm male specimen, who delicately sipped my # 12 Ecdyonurus Parachute just a few inches from the far bank of the river. He gave me a really hard time fighting long and hard on the rocky bottom of the pool, and I will keep the dear memory of those sublime fly-fishing moments for a very, very long time.

Goodbye Slovenia, and see you in 2009 !

… and now, at least for the next 10 months, the only chance for me to enjoy the beautiful landscapes, rivers and fish of Slovenia will be to watch the reports that you, fellow forum members, will be posting on the forum … so keep them coming guys, keep them coming !

Nekaj dni nazaj, sva s s52vk-om obiskala zg.Idrijco.

..mikavni vzorci ..

..še ena, "zapeljiva"..

..tokrat nekoliko drugačna podoba idrijske prebivalke - kobra(nke) ..

..s52vk in Idrijca..

Erik ni problema;) me veseli, da si užival.

Bravo Look for the pictures as well as the fish, it's not easy to fool the Idrijca trout when the water is so clear and low.

Hoj muharja!

Ma sta uživala...lepo, pravo "apotekarsko" zahtevno muharjenje.
